Working Title Transcriber (Part-time), Disability Services for Students
Brief Summary of Job Description

Transcriber posts and maintains a schedule of work hours. This includes time in the classroom transcribing and time in the office doing transcription preparation and editing, scheduling and mentoring of transcribers and other duties as assigned.

Transcribe material from spoken lectures and discussions into computer using sophisticated abbreviation software; locate documents in files when revisions are requested and insert, delete, correct and email documents as necessary; rapidly set up and break down equipment in classroom settings and regularly relocate equipment to different locations; operate peripheral equipment such as printers, desktop computers, copiers; maintain equipment and evaluate hardware/software to determine suitability; enter specialized vocabulary into software as needed to assist in the rapid and accurate translation of spoken information into electronic and print materials; identify and take corrective action to resolve routine operational problems; use other adaptive technology as needed.

Attend weekly staff meetings. Assist with supervision of the day to day functions in the Academic Success Offices Lab, including supervision of student workers and scheduling of staff to monitor the lab and provide exam proctoring for students that have testing accommodations. Help with assessment and evaluation for services for students with disabilities. Help develop and annually review policy and procedures and other materials used for services for students with disabilities. Present transition information both internally and externally. Assist DSS program with training faculty and staff on skills and procedures for working with students with disabilities. May be assigned other responsibilities for supporting students with disabilities.

Job Duties

-Provide real-time transcription services to students with accommodation. Prepare for class. Edit transcripts.
-Annually help update policy and procedures and other materials used for services for students with disabilities.
-Maintain confidentiality of all department communications especially information relating to disability issues. Attend weekly staff meetings and fall/spring staff retreats.
-Communicate with Faculty and Staff to ensure equal access for students. Promote a positive environment.
-Answer phone and inquiries about the department.

Required Qualifications

High school plus four years’ experience using word processing software; excellent typing skills necessary with a minimum of 65 wpm; candidate must complete keyboarding exam with transcription network provider before being considered for the position; candidate must also be able to learn use of specialized abbreviation software program and transcribing skills; comfortable working in an academic setting with diverse populations; must be able to work hours that correspond to students’ schedules, including occasional evenings. Ability to complete TypeWell training or similar specialized training. Experience working with persons with disabilities. Knowledge of confidentiality issues and ability to maintain, oral and written communication skills.

Ability to use spreadsheets for data management. Problem solving skills, experience working in a diverse environment. Excellent listening skills and demonstrated ability to identify essential components of orally presented information/excellent knowledge of English grammar, spelling and academic vocabulary; ability to operate PC/laptop computer and other peripheral equipment (copier, printer).

Preferred Qualifications

4 yr. College Degree; Preferred: TypeWell Qualified Transcriber preferred (or required training for qualification will be supported by employer)
